An Autumn Porch

My porch is my very favorite place to be!  We eat here, do our homework here, have coffee and play here and much more.  It is the first thing you see when you come over and the last thing to see when you leave.  It is an important part of our home and we love to keep it fresh!

This shoot was extra fun…because my favorite time of the year is Fall.  I love the temps to be cool enough for a sweater but warm enough for being outside.  The colors and smell in the air are my favorite!  We chose our projects to correspond with the changing season, the changing activities and the upcoming holiday.

We will be featuring the following this month {plus plenty more…as you know we like to throw in extras}…

Making the Amazing Raspberry Buttercream Cake

We had so many comments on the beautiful cake from A BRUNCH AFFAIR so we thought we’d give you a little more info on it.  We love baking, but we also love eating what we bake so I try to limit ourselves.  Sweets are our thing!  Anyone who knows us knows how much we both love cake.  No need for ice cream with it, just plain cake with sugary frosting…and all self-control is lost!  So, when choosing what to make for the Dining Room Shoot, cake was on the top of our list.  We decided to take a simple white cake with buttercream frosting and give it some sweet accessories.  We used a delicious homemade mixed berry jam to sweeten up the middle, then topped it off with a bed of fresh raspberries.  I used my Pampered Chef Cake Decorator tool to make the beaded detail- so simple, yet so sweet!

After the cake is completely cooled, add a layer of frosting and jam to the top of one round.  Top with the other round so the frosting/jam mix is in the middle.  Some great ideas for jam substitutes are jelly of any flavor, lemon cream cheese, coconut, pineapple, chocolate, custard, candy bars and anything you can think of…but remember to change your topping and/or frosting flavor to match.

Use a spatula or a baker’s knife to spread the frosting.  If it starts to pull the cake apart, stop and put in the freezer for a few minutes to cool it.  Use your cake decorator {our favorite is from The Pampered Chef} to decorate.

Top with fresh raspberries and keep cold so the raspberries won’t melt red on to your frosting.

Vintage White Cake with Buttercream Frosting

The secret to this cake…is the raspberry jam mixed with frosting between the 2 layers of cake.  We also added a dense layer of raspberries on the top of the cake…what color!!!

Dessert and flowers….. two of our favorite things!  Add some coffee and we are on cloud nine.  This dining room looked much different 12 years ago.  It was dark and dreary to say the least, but with a coat of paint and a new light fixture it began to have a whole new personality.  I decided to use a mix of old and new when choosing the right dining room set.  I purchase the crisp white pedestal table from IKEA, then paired it with some old chippy chairs I found at tag sales.  I chose 2 slightly more formal chairs to go with 4 fun side chairs.  All 6 chairs cost me less than $100.  The rest of the decor has about the same theme, crisp white ceramic pieces beside a chippy and rusty tin….matches made in heaven:).  Hope you enjoy!!!
