A “Girlie Girl” Room Makeover

The Challenge:  To convert an office/playroom into a sister’s bedroom/playroom without 2 little girls finding out.

The Result:  2 very surprised and delighted sisters!

Being the mother of 3 boys, I always JUMP at the offer to do up a little girls room!  This job was double the fun as it was for 2 sweet little sisters, and it was going to be a BIG surprise!  These little gals love to read, dress up, listen to music, play kitchen, do art projects, etc. so we had a lot to fit into this space but it all worked out perfectly!

Block Art ~ So Many Possibilites

One of most favorite tutorials has been our Block Decor from “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  It was simple, but we have made it even simpler!!  Once again, with help from the Graphics Fairy, we were able to turn a a 2×4 wooden block into something unique and fun.  We also used some fun scrap booking kits to do a little layered art.  Follow these simple steps to create your own.

{By the way, this is just a sample of the fun items we will have for sale at our JosieJones Cottage Sale coming up in September! Stay tuned for details!}

Create Your Own Block Art

Materials Needed:

mod podge

block of wood

clip art image

sponge brush

scissors

pencil

glue and glitter and fine paintbrush {optional}

 The first step is to select your clip art image and size it slightly smaller than the block of wood you are using {ie. for a 4×6 inch rectangle of wood, I would size my image to 3.5×5.5 inches}.  Cut out the clip art.  Next you will need to cut a section of 2×4 to your preferred size.  Sand the wood to get a smooth surface.

Paint the entire front of your block of wood with Mod Podge using your sponge brush.

Adhere the pre-cut clip art onto the block with the Mod Podge.  Use the heel of your hand to flatten out any bumps or bubbles. Mod Podge again over the book page. This step will give it a finished surface look.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, you can add glue to certain areas you would like glitter to adhere, then sprinkle glitter onto the areas with glue.

{This step is optional, but we think it’s especially fun on holiday art}

So there you have it!  Unique, simple, and totally one of a kind!!

ENJOY!!!

{These are a great inexpensive alternative to the Sid Dickens Memory Blocks!}

Dessert and flowers….. two of our favorite things!  Add some coffee and we are on cloud nine.  This dining room looked much different 12 years ago.  It was dark and dreary to say the least, but with a coat of paint and a new light fixture it began to have a whole new personality.  I decided to use a mix of old and new when choosing the right dining room set.  I purchase the crisp white pedestal table from IKEA, then paired it with some old chippy chairs I found at tag sales.  I chose 2 slightly more formal chairs to go with 4 fun side chairs.  All 6 chairs cost me less than $100.  The rest of the decor has about the same theme, crisp white ceramic pieces beside a chippy and rusty tin….matches made in heaven:).  Hope you enjoy!!!

June 2011 Natalie’s Bathroom Before and After

Well hello!  Welcome to week one of “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  As you can see, it wasn’t always the oasis shown in the “after” photos.

It took a ton of hard work and long hours, but the end result was better than I had ever envisioned.  Good things come to those who wait and I waited 12 years for this bathroom.

When the day came, I grabbed my crow bar and hammer and the rest was history!!

I worked with the existing walls and plumbing layout to keep the cost down, but then splurged some on the tile flooring and tub (although I was able to still get the tub for a steal!).

Over the next 4 weeks we will feature several DIY projects, recipes, and fabulous finds from “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  We hope you enjoy!

Block Decor

DIY No.  {Wooden Block Decor}

Who would have thought a simple 2×4 could be made into something so sweet!

I have a love for old book pages and am always looking for ways to use them.

I am often framing clip art I find, but frames can get expensive so I decided to try this instead.

I love the combination of the rustic wood, the aged book page, and the fancy glitter.

The possibilities are endless with this idea!

Materials Needed:

mod podge

glue

block of wood

old book pages

sponge brush

elmers glue

glitter

scissors

pencil

design pattern

The first step is to trace your book page or background pattern piece.  Cut out the outline.

Paint the entire front of your block of wood with Mod Podge using your sponge brush.

Adhere the pre-cut book page onto the block with the Mod Podge.  Use the heel of your hand to flatten out any bumps or bubbles. Mod Podge again over the book page. This step will give it a finished surface look.

Rub the back of the outline of your designusing a pencil.  When you eventually trace over the front of the design, the pencil lead will rub onto the block which creates your design outline.

With the design facing you and the back of the design touching the block of wood, trace around your design.

The pressure and graphite from the pencil and the pencil scribbles make the outline of your design very easy to see.

Mix equal parts Elmer’s glue and water for a smoother glue to paint onto your block.  Use your glue mixture and paint brushto paint inside the design.  Sprinkle glitter onto the front and display.
