A “Girlie Girl” Room Makeover

The Challenge:  To convert an office/playroom into a sister’s bedroom/playroom without 2 little girls finding out.

The Result:  2 very surprised and delighted sisters!

Being the mother of 3 boys, I always JUMP at the offer to do up a little girls room!  This job was double the fun as it was for 2 sweet little sisters, and it was going to be a BIG surprise!  These little gals love to read, dress up, listen to music, play kitchen, do art projects, etc. so we had a lot to fit into this space but it all worked out perfectly!

Lincoln’s Retreat Fab Find Furniture

Here’s how we pulled it all together…

The Dresser and Bed: We bought these at an amazing antiques sale that happens in Cambridge, MN once a year in the beginning of August {The Cambridge Antique Fair}.  We bought the set before Lincoln was even in a big boy bed.  Good thing…that monkey was climbing out of the crib at 1 1/2 years old and we needed it sooner than we expected!  We did nothing to the bed but painted the dresser green and then blue on top of that.  I sanded it down to expose some of the green tone underneath.  I used a flat paint for both so that sanding looked better.  We paid $200. for both…after some bargaining on the last sale day in the last hours.

The shelf:  I asked the previous home owners if they would leave anything they did not want to move and they did…including this shelf.  They had great taste and they left some amazing treasures!  I painted this shelf with Painter’s Touch Spraypaint in an aqua color {I ONLY use this spray paint…it is the best and I have tried them all!}.  Around here only Menard’s carries this brand.

The lamps:  TJMaxx…of course!!  A steal at only $30!

The bedding: Pottery Barn Kids {and it looks like they are on sale right now}

The wallpaper:  My favorite source for great wallpaper and a GREAT price is Wallpaperstogo.com {always check out their sale and clearance items}  This room took about 6 rolls at $9.99 each.  Be sure to measure and save room for lining up the patterns {as this takes more paper} before you purchase…it is the shipping that gets ya!

The alarm clock: IKEA for $5.99

The other items:  Yard Sales and free items we found {Stillwater has amazing free finds!}

Fab Find Pillow, Rug and End table

These vintage looking screen printed pillows are all the rage these days, but can be spendy.  Well once again I struck gold at TJ Maxx when I found accessories for this sun room.  These screen printed pillows only cost $9.99.  Now  we won’t say this often, but really….. we could not make this pillow for that cheap!  All of the pillows, the rug {$149}, and the unique end table {$75} were purchased at TJ Maxx.  Some TJ Maxx days are unsuccessful, but this shopping day was a huge success!

Darling Linen Wreath

DIY   {Darling Linen Wreath}

So simple, yet so sweet!  This wreath literally cost me less than $3 in material.  It is the perfect piece to adorn that empty hook in your entry hall, or to hang from the post of a headboard.  It was so easy to make but yet it makes such a statement to me.  Simple can be beautiful- we don’t need to overdo it always.

Materials Needed:

straight pins

scissors

pinking shears

thread

hot glue gun

fabric

ribbon

craft styrofoam wreath

The first step is to cut 2 inch strips of fabric (cut as long as possible), then pin the first part of your fabric to the syrofoam wreath.  This will keep it in place as you wrap the fabric around the wreath to cover it.

once it is completely covered, pin the endof the fabric in place…try to hide your pinsby pinning it on the back of the wreath.

using a new piece of fabric cut into 2 inchstrips, 18 inches long, fold the strip in half.

Begin by tightly rolling your folded strip of fabric to form the center of your flower.  Use your thread and needle at the base and occasionally secure the roll.

Eventually, you want to start rolling the fabric looser to get a fuller flower.  Be sure to leave about 2 inches unrolled to make a leaf.  At the end of the strip, you need to sinch the base and secure by sewing and tying off your thread.

Cut the loose end at an angle to form the shape of a leaf.

Secure the leaf shape by folding and gluing into place on your wreath.

Hot glue the flowers in an arrangement.  Tie ribbon through to hang.

To decorate, use vintage jewelry {this is an old clip-on earring}, a sea shell, jewelry pieces sold at Michael’s/Joann’s, ribbon bows, buttons, faux flowers, faux fruits, feathers, birds, etc.

Concrete Counter Top

DIY  {Concrete Counter Top}

As the daughter of a cement man, my heart holds a special place for concrete. Sounds weird but it is true!  I love that it can formed to any size, shape, color- and it’s inexpensive which make me love it even more!!  So it was a no brainer to use concrete for my custom bathroom vanity top.  Although the material is cheap, the labor can be expensive so I would highly recommend trying this yourself.  We have attached a DIY tutorial for you that we think will be very helpful.  Concrete is a great alternative to expensive solid surfaces like marble, granite, etc..  The look may not appeal to everyone, but for my contemporary country bathroom, it was the perfect choice. Enjoy!!
