A “Girlie Girl” Room Makeover

The Challenge:  To convert an office/playroom into a sister’s bedroom/playroom without 2 little girls finding out.

The Result:  2 very surprised and delighted sisters!

Being the mother of 3 boys, I always JUMP at the offer to do up a little girls room!  This job was double the fun as it was for 2 sweet little sisters, and it was going to be a BIG surprise!  These little gals love to read, dress up, listen to music, play kitchen, do art projects, etc. so we had a lot to fit into this space but it all worked out perfectly!

Linen and Book Page Flowers

Darling Linen Book Page Flowers

What you will need:

Tracing Shapes {we used 3 different sized round ribbon spools}

Pencil/Marker

Scissors/Pinking Shears

Buttons

Fabric

Book Pages

Needle/Thread

Trace different size circles onto your book pages and cut with pinking shears.

Trace more different sized circles onto your fabric and also cut with the pinking shears.

With all shapes cut, layer them alternating book pages/fabric from largest to smallest shape on top.

Once you have a stack, sew the button onto the top/middle of your shapes as the center of your flower.

Squish and bend it to separate the layers and give it a more textured look and feel.

Now use this flower to decorate pillows, lamp shades, gifts, headbands, barrettes, etc.

Block Art ~ So Many Possibilites

One of most favorite tutorials has been our Block Decor from “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  It was simple, but we have made it even simpler!!  Once again, with help from the Graphics Fairy, we were able to turn a a 2×4 wooden block into something unique and fun.  We also used some fun scrap booking kits to do a little layered art.  Follow these simple steps to create your own.

{By the way, this is just a sample of the fun items we will have for sale at our JosieJones Cottage Sale coming up in September! Stay tuned for details!}

Create Your Own Block Art

Materials Needed:

mod podge

block of wood

clip art image

sponge brush

scissors

pencil

glue and glitter and fine paintbrush {optional}

 The first step is to select your clip art image and size it slightly smaller than the block of wood you are using {ie. for a 4×6 inch rectangle of wood, I would size my image to 3.5×5.5 inches}.  Cut out the clip art.  Next you will need to cut a section of 2×4 to your preferred size.  Sand the wood to get a smooth surface.

Paint the entire front of your block of wood with Mod Podge using your sponge brush.

Adhere the pre-cut clip art onto the block with the Mod Podge.  Use the heel of your hand to flatten out any bumps or bubbles. Mod Podge again over the book page. This step will give it a finished surface look.

Once the Mod Podge is dry, you can add glue to certain areas you would like glitter to adhere, then sprinkle glitter onto the areas with glue.

{This step is optional, but we think it’s especially fun on holiday art}

So there you have it!  Unique, simple, and totally one of a kind!!

ENJOY!!!

{These are a great inexpensive alternative to the Sid Dickens Memory Blocks!}

Antique Cameo Napkin Ring

Our DIYs don’t get simpler than this!  We were so excited to come across these beautiful brooches at a garage sale this past weekend and thought this would be the perfect way to use them.  We decided to add a touch of rustic by using jute rope to tie around our custom linen napkin then pinned the antique brooch to the front for the final touch.  We especially loved the idea of the brooches being a unique favor for your guest to take home and they will too!  The brooches cost $2 each so not only easy, but very inexpensive!

Dessert and flowers….. two of our favorite things!  Add some coffee and we are on cloud nine.  This dining room looked much different 12 years ago.  It was dark and dreary to say the least, but with a coat of paint and a new light fixture it began to have a whole new personality.  I decided to use a mix of old and new when choosing the right dining room set.  I purchase the crisp white pedestal table from IKEA, then paired it with some old chippy chairs I found at tag sales.  I chose 2 slightly more formal chairs to go with 4 fun side chairs.  All 6 chairs cost me less than $100.  The rest of the decor has about the same theme, crisp white ceramic pieces beside a chippy and rusty tin….matches made in heaven:).  Hope you enjoy!!!
