Lincoln’s Retreat Fab Find Furniture

Here’s how we pulled it all together…

The Dresser and Bed: We bought these at an amazing antiques sale that happens in Cambridge, MN once a year in the beginning of August {The Cambridge Antique Fair}.  We bought the set before Lincoln was even in a big boy bed.  Good thing…that monkey was climbing out of the crib at 1 1/2 years old and we needed it sooner than we expected!  We did nothing to the bed but painted the dresser green and then blue on top of that.  I sanded it down to expose some of the green tone underneath.  I used a flat paint for both so that sanding looked better.  We paid $200. for both…after some bargaining on the last sale day in the last hours.

The shelf:  I asked the previous home owners if they would leave anything they did not want to move and they did…including this shelf.  They had great taste and they left some amazing treasures!  I painted this shelf with Painter’s Touch Spraypaint in an aqua color {I ONLY use this spray paint…it is the best and I have tried them all!}.  Around here only Menard’s carries this brand.

The lamps:  TJMaxx…of course!!  A steal at only $30!

The bedding: Pottery Barn Kids {and it looks like they are on sale right now}

The wallpaper:  My favorite source for great wallpaper and a GREAT price is Wallpaperstogo.com {always check out their sale and clearance items}  This room took about 6 rolls at $9.99 each.  Be sure to measure and save room for lining up the patterns {as this takes more paper} before you purchase…it is the shipping that gets ya!

The alarm clock: IKEA for $5.99

The other items:  Yard Sales and free items we found {Stillwater has amazing free finds!}

Fab Find Ceramic Partridges, Retro Coffee Table and a Vintage Thermometer

Thrifting is one of our favorite hobbies and these little ceramic partridges are just the type of things that we like to find.  I found these on a Goodwill “color tag” sale day for $1.49!  Such a simple look that adds a unique flare to the room.

This great retro coffee table was a great find for only $65 dollars.  Just goes to show what a fresh coat of paint can do for an out-of-date coffee table.

This vintage thermometer was an amazing find for $10 at a yard sale.  It is true that one person’s trash is someone else’s treasure!  This can be a great magnetic board that can be dressed up with cute magnets.

Repurposed Toolbox Ideas

You may recall this rustic little tool box we used in our first Brunch Affair post.  We’ve offered 3 more fun ways that it could be used.  It is so simple, yet it’s possibilities are endless!  We love to find attractive storage solutions and we think this little guy fits the bill perfectly!!

Brunch Affair Color Switch!

We had so much fun with our dining room shoot, that we’ve decided to do it again but in a totally different color scheme.  We switched out all the pinks and greens for yellows, and aquas.  When you have a neutral base (white table and chairs, a subtle wall color and neutral drapes) this is so easy for anyone to do.  My favorite decorating advice it just that- keep the main pieces neutral then add accent colors with pillows, artwork, flowers, etc..  Not only is this easy an easy way to decorate, but also affordable!

{So what did we do differently?}

1. We used hydrangeas instead of peonies in the milk bottles because they were in season.

2.  We simplified our napkin ring even more by just adding a simple daylily to it.

3.  We used a different arrangement of vintage table clothes.

4.  We took a simple white plate then dolled it up with an aqua saucer (found at Goodwill for $.99 each)

5.  We changed up the centerpiece with flowers, etc.  (We took the coffee out of the vintage canister, and added hydrangeas instead!)

We’re so excited to have our Brunch Affair featured in the April 2012 issue of Romantic Homes Magazine!!!

And that’s our Brunch Affair Color Switch!!! Take a look at the differences below!!!

Dessert and flowers….. two of our favorite things!  Add some coffee and we are on cloud nine.  This dining room looked much different 12 years ago.  It was dark and dreary to say the least, but with a coat of paint and a new light fixture it began to have a whole new personality.  I decided to use a mix of old and new when choosing the right dining room set.  I purchase the crisp white pedestal table from IKEA, then paired it with some old chippy chairs I found at tag sales.  I chose 2 slightly more formal chairs to go with 4 fun side chairs.  All 6 chairs cost me less than $100.  The rest of the decor has about the same theme, crisp white ceramic pieces beside a chippy and rusty tin….matches made in heaven:).  Hope you enjoy!!!
