Repurposing Old Silver Serving Pieces- DIY

 Here is a fun and simple project I did last spring that I thought I’d share with you.

Here’s what you’ll need:

~An old silver serving piece

{I find these at Goodwill all the time.  The more tarnished the better in my opinion:)}

~Book pages {printed scrap book paper could be fun too}

~A nest {You can usually find these at a floral shop or a craft store.}

~Aqua ribbon for eggs {obviously you could use fake eggs from a craft store instead.}

~A scissors {or a paper shredder if you have one}

~A hot glue gun

 Make your eggs but tying your ribbon in a knot. I repeated  the knot until it became the size of a small egg.

I then trimmed off the extra ribbon.

Next I tore out pages from an old book and fed them through my paper shredder.  You could use a scissors to cut them as well.

I applied hot glue to the tray and pressed crumpled up clumps of the shredded book pages onto it until it was covered with a nice layer.

I finished by gluing my nest onto the tray, and then glued my ribbon eggs into place.

Sweet, simple, and unique!

These would make a great addition to your home for spring or to give as a hostess gift this weekend for Easter.  Have a great day!!

CUSTOM SWITCHPLATES

These custom switch plates are the perfect way to personalize your space.  We chose to use book pages but any decorative paper could work.  The key is to make sure your paper is light weight so it will lay nicely.

Items you will need:

Switchplates from your local hardware store.

I got mine in a 10 pack at Menard’s for a couples dollars.

Elmer’s Glue {Michael’s, Target, Joann Fabrics, etc.}.  …stock up at Back-to-School time for the best prices!

A Poly Sponge Brush from Menards, Joann’s, Michael’s, etc. {small size}.

Straight pins.

Water and a cup.

Old book pages {or fabric, music paper, etc.}.

Take the screws out of the switchplates before staring your project.

Cut your paper about a half-inch larger than your switchplate to save room to fold it over and secure.  Mix equal parts water and Elmer’s Glue in a cup and mix thoroughly.  It is easiest to work with the glue mix when your brush is soaked.  Wet the entire paper and secure the switchplate to the paper.

Fold the sides of the paper around the edges and into the back.  Press firmly and evenly to secure all edges.  The corners need to be folded in and flattened.

Brush the glue mix over the entire front of the switchplate to harden it and create a sheen.  Also brush over the back of the switchplate to secure the edges to the back more securely.   Let this dry completely before continuing.

I found that is was easiest to use a straight pin to slide around the edges of the holes to cut super close to the edge.  If the paper is perfectly dry, it is a really easy cut.

The last step is to paint around the edges of the holes to secure the loose paper from the cutting process.  Let dry and enjoy!!

Linen and Book Page Flowers

Darling Linen Book Page Flowers

What you will need:

Tracing Shapes {we used 3 different sized round ribbon spools}

Pencil/Marker

Scissors/Pinking Shears

Buttons

Fabric

Book Pages

Needle/Thread

Trace different size circles onto your book pages and cut with pinking shears.

Trace more different sized circles onto your fabric and also cut with the pinking shears.

With all shapes cut, layer them alternating book pages/fabric from largest to smallest shape on top.

Once you have a stack, sew the button onto the top/middle of your shapes as the center of your flower.

Squish and bend it to separate the layers and give it a more textured look and feel.

Now use this flower to decorate pillows, lamp shades, gifts, headbands, barrettes, etc.

June 2011 Natalie’s Bathroom Before and After

Well hello!  Welcome to week one of “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  As you can see, it wasn’t always the oasis shown in the “after” photos.

It took a ton of hard work and long hours, but the end result was better than I had ever envisioned.  Good things come to those who wait and I waited 12 years for this bathroom.

When the day came, I grabbed my crow bar and hammer and the rest was history!!

I worked with the existing walls and plumbing layout to keep the cost down, but then splurged some on the tile flooring and tub (although I was able to still get the tub for a steal!).

Over the next 4 weeks we will feature several DIY projects, recipes, and fabulous finds from “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  We hope you enjoy!

1. Darling Muslin Wreath

2.  Homemade Lemon Scrub

3.  Simple Block Art

4.  Tub Fab Find

5.  Easy Transfer Decor

6.  Homemade Bath Salts

7.  Concrete Countertops

8.  Vanity Table Fab Find

Block Decor

DIY No.  {Wooden Block Decor}

Who would have thought a simple 2×4 could be made into something so sweet!

I have a love for old book pages and am always looking for ways to use them.

I am often framing clip art I find, but frames can get expensive so I decided to try this instead.

I love the combination of the rustic wood, the aged book page, and the fancy glitter.

The possibilities are endless with this idea!

Materials Needed:

mod podge

glue

block of wood

old book pages

sponge brush

elmers glue

glitter

scissors

pencil

design pattern

The first step is to trace your book page or background pattern piece.  Cut out the outline.

Paint the entire front of your block of wood with Mod Podge using your sponge brush.

Adhere the pre-cut book page onto the block with the Mod Podge.  Use the heel of your hand to flatten out any bumps or bubbles. Mod Podge again over the book page. This step will give it a finished surface look.

Rub the back of the outline of your designusing a pencil.  When you eventually trace over the front of the design, the pencil lead will rub onto the block which creates your design outline.

With the design facing you and the back of the design touching the block of wood, trace around your design.

The pressure and graphite from the pencil and the pencil scribbles make the outline of your design very easy to see.

Mix equal parts Elmer’s glue and water for a smoother glue to paint onto your block.  Use your glue mixture and paint brushto paint inside the design.  Sprinkle glitter onto the front and display.
