June 2011 Natalie’s Bathroom Before and After

Well hello!  Welcome to week one of “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  As you can see, it wasn’t always the oasis shown in the “after” photos.

It took a ton of hard work and long hours, but the end result was better than I had ever envisioned.  Good things come to those who wait and I waited 12 years for this bathroom.

When the day came, I grabbed my crow bar and hammer and the rest was history!!

I worked with the existing walls and plumbing layout to keep the cost down, but then splurged some on the tile flooring and tub (although I was able to still get the tub for a steal!).

Over the next 4 weeks we will feature several DIY projects, recipes, and fabulous finds from “Natalie’s Bathroom”.  We hope you enjoy!

1. Darling Muslin Wreath

2.  Homemade Lemon Scrub

3.  Simple Block Art

4.  Tub Fab Find

5.  Easy Transfer Decor

6.  Homemade Bath Salts

7.  Concrete Countertops

8.  Vanity Table Fab Find

Custom Apothacary Jars

DIY   {Custom Apothecary Jars}

You can find these jars in any home decor department, but I usually find mine at thrift stores ranging from $2-$5.

They are great for any space.  I have used them in the kitchen to store candy in, or on my desk to store rubber bands in.

In this case, they hold my soaps and Q-tips.  They are simple, yet elegant and when customized with an inexpensive rub-on transfer, they are one-of-a-kind!

Materials Needed:

glass jar

popsicle stick

rub-on transfers

Place the sticky part of the rub-on onto the glass surface.  You will use the popsicle stick to rub the plasticso the pattern is facing you. Rub all edges and peel away when done.

Clawfoot Tub

Fab Find   {Claw foot Tub}

For years (and I mean 30+), I dreamt of bubble baths in a claw foot tub.  Some day I would replace the perfectly good tub that I had with a beautiful old claw foot tub.  I say “old” because I knew I could never afford a “new” one.  I searched yard sales, antique stores, reuse centers for the perfect tub but wasn’t never quite sold on any of them.  They all needed to be refinished, and although I new there were DIY kits you could buy to do this, it was hard to imagine it ever looking clean and new.  So I continues searching and one night for about the hundredth time on craigslist, I typed in claw foot tub and there it was!  A “new”, gently used tub for sale with all of it’s hardware for $500.  This was too good to be true as I knew that the faucets alone could run up to $300.  So the next day, my husband and I drove an hour and a half to look at it and it was perfect!  We loaded it into the back of our SUV and hauled it home!  We celebrate our fab find with dinner at “White Castle” ( you can’t not stop when you come across one:))  So, in this case, my patience paid off and I ended up with the tub of my dreams and EVERY night I soak in a bath of bubbles, and yes…it is everything I ever dreamed of!

Vanity Table

Fab Find  {Vanity Table}

So 12 years ago I was at a friends poll barn and saw this darling little farm table.  He was surprised at how taken I was by it because he and his brothers just used it to take apart engines on.  The next time he visited me, he surprised me with that little farm table!!  I removed the scratched up enameled top that was on it and to my surprise found a beautiful rustic wood plank top.  I cleaned it up and found a spot for it in my laundry room.  There is sat with piles of laundry on it for 9 years.  Then next home it found was in my office as my desk and that is where it spent the next 3 years.  Then came along my bathroom remodel.  I wanted a vanity that was custom and unique.  I search high and low for the perfect dresser or buffet but was coming up empty.  I was replacing a simple pedestal sink which kept the bathroom feeling spacious so all of those heavy pieces of furniture just seemed like they would bog down the space.  Then one day as I walked past my office and saw that little table, the light bulb went on!  It was the perfect look, color, and length that I needed.  So we shortened the depth of it, reattached the back legs and left the casters on to give it a little unexpected element of surprise- it obviously isn’t going to roll anywhere.  You may wonder how I get by without drawers or cabinet space…. first of all I sorted through all of the make-up, hair products, etc. that I don’t ever use and that showed me that if I kept organized and simple, I really didn’t need much storage space at all.  So I found cute bins, baskets, and miscellaneous containers (ie. an old cigar box, ceramic planters and a great wooden drawer) to house the countless beauty products I felt I just couldn’t live with out!  Storage problem solved!  Now every night I lounge in my tub, looking at that sweet little table that once was covered with grease and engine parts and giggle inside as now it sits adorned with a vase of roses, a vanilla scented candle, and almond scented hand soap.  Ohhh the wonderful possibilities we all may still hold!!!
