Well, Brant has vacation days this month and you know what that means…a room redo!!
We have a bathroom off the kitchen which is also our laundry room and place where the kids’ school uniforms are stored…the room has many purposes. It is on the main floor, has a lot of use and it has never been redone. It’s time!

We started by ripping off the old wainscotting, eliminating the medicine cabinet and light fixture.

As usual, we started ripping apart the room and found many surprises! One of the most shocking surprises was the toilet paper stuffed in the electrical boxes to hold it in place. What, really??!! Who thought this would be a safe idea?

Next, Brant rewired the bathroom in order to accommodate the new light fixtures I purchased. The new fixtures will come from the ceiling instead of the wall. During this process, Brant needed to fix the wiring, add an updated outlet, add a new light switch and new outlets in the ceiling to receive the new lights…I am in awe of how he knows all of this stuff!

We were looking for free pallets online to use for the ceiling when we spotted the garbage bin full of the wainscotting from the walls. The back side of the wainscotting is raw wood panels. Instead of finding pallets, ripping them apart and sanding them we did the ultimate in recycling by just staining the back of these garbage pieces.

We simply stained them, let them dry overnight and then stapled them to the ceiling {you are going to love the final results}.

For the walls, we decided to use MDF boards in a horizontal fashion. We could have bought MDF boards cut perfectly and already primed but they were more expensive than we wanted to spend. What we ended up doing is buying sheets of MDF board, cutting them into strips {10″ wide on the 10′ strip} using the table saw and then painted them their first coat while spread out on the driveway. It was a lot more work and the boards aren’t perfect but it saved a ton of money!

Before we hung the boards on the wall, we stapled up some resin paper so the spaces between the boards {a tiny slit} would be a uniform shadow.

I know it is hard to imagine all that I am talking about in this post until you see the final product. We are workin’ hard to get it all done so the next post will reveal it all!
Here are some progressive photos…
