I’ve shared this sign making technique with you in the past with my “Land That I Love” sign, but I thought I’d show it again in a different look with a different phrase. “You Are My Sunshine” is a song that I use to sing to my babies while rocking them to sleep so it has special meaning to me.
Here is the sign I made…

Here is the method I used to make it.
Materials Needed:
A piece of wood cut to size.
A can of spray primer {I like to use Rust-oleum, Painters Touch}
A can of spray paint {I used Rust-oleum, American Accents, Sun Flower, Satin finish}
A can of white spray paint {I used Rust-oleum, American Accents, Blossom White, Satin finish}
Contact paper {I found mine in the kitchen department at Walmart}
Words printed out on computer paper to your desired size.
An X-acto knife
Tape
Sand paper {if you decided to distress it some}
*Remember, the photos below were for a different sign!

Step 1: Begin by spray priming your wood

Step 2: Once your primer has dried, spray your wood with the background color paint.

Step 3: Once the background paint has dried, measure out and cut a piece of your contact papers slightly larger than your piece of wood.

Step 4: Peel the paper backing off your contact paper and smoothly adhere it to your wood.

Step 5: Position your printed words onto the contact paper and tape in place.

Step 6: Using your X-acto knife, cut out your letters making sure to cut through the paper and contact paper.

Step 7: Once the letters are cut out, carefully peel them off of your wood.

Below you can see the cut outs revealed.

Step 8: Using your white spray paint, spray a good coat of paint over the cut out letters.

Step 9: Once the white paint has dried completely (about an hour), carefully peel the contact paper off of your wood.

Now for my “You Are My Sunshine” sign, I wrapped a piece of sand paper around a block of wood and rubbed the back and forth over the surface of my sign. I loved how it revealed the raw wood as well as the white primer.
